Native PHP: Build a Smart FAQ Bot for Your Customer Portal with AI Routing

Native PHP: Изградете паметен FAQ бот за вашиот кориснички портал со AI рутирање

A useful FAQ bot should not behave like an open-ended chatbot. Its job is narrower: find the portal’s relevant policy, produce a concise answer, and fail safely when the evidence or AI service is unavailable. That constraint makes the feature more accurate, easier to test, and much less risky to operate.

This tutorial builds that production-shaped integration in Native PHP 8.3. A small local search layer selects relevant FAQ entries, while the Smart Routing AI Model turns those entries into a natural response. The API remains behind a dedicated boundary with bounded timeouts, selective retries, defensive response parsing, and structured failure states.

Get access before writing integration code

First, register an account, or use the sign-in page if you already have one.

  1. Open the Smart Routing AI Model service page.
  2. Choose an available Free, Plus, or Pro plan and complete its activation.
  3. Open the official service documentation.
  4. Find the Service token panel and copy the service-scoped token.
  5. Store it in your project’s environment configuration, never in committed PHP code.

This service is not anonymous: every API request requires its service token. Regenerating the token revokes the previously active token, so coordinate rotation with deployment rather than regenerating it casually.

The exact integration is an HTTP POST to https://ai.mihajlo.mk/api/smart-routing-ai-model/v1/chat/completions, authenticated with Authorization: Bearer {serviceToken}. It accepts an OpenAI-compatible chat request and returns the standard OpenAI-style response. Model selection belongs to the plan-based router, so the application does not hardcode an upstream model.

Verify access with the smallest useful request:

curl --fail-with-body \
  --request POST \
  --url https://ai.mihajlo.mk/api/smart-routing-ai-model/v1/chat/completions \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_SERVICE_TOKEN" \
  --header "Content-Type: application/json" \
  --data '{
    "messages": [
      {"role": "user", "content": "Reply with: connection verified"}
    ]
  }'

A successful response should contain a non-empty string at choices[0].message.content. We will nevertheless validate that path defensively instead of assuming every successful-looking response is usable.

Create a local environment file and exclude it from version control:

# .env
SMART_ROUTING_TOKEN=YOUR_SERVICE_TOKEN

# .gitignore
.env
/vendor/
.phpunit.cache/

# Load the local environment before starting PHP.
set -a
. ./.env
set +a
php -S 127.0.0.1:8080 -t public

Native PHP does not load .env automatically. The shell commands above are suitable for local development; production should inject the same variable through its process manager, container secret, or hosting control panel.

Architecture: search first, generate second

The request path has four deliberate stages:

  1. The portal controller authenticates the customer, verifies CSRF protection, and validates the question.
  2. A local repository scores FAQ entries and selects up to three relevant records.
  3. The AI client sends only those records and the question to the routing endpoint.
  4. A domain result maps the provider response into answered, no_match, temporarily_unavailable, or configuration_error.

Local search keeps ordinary policy lookup deterministic and limits prompt size. AI improves phrasing; it does not become the policy database. For a small team, an in-memory catalog is appropriate. A larger catalog can later replace the repository with database full-text search without changing the API client or controller.

Use this compact project structure:

The only third-party development dependency is PHPUnit 11, which supports PHP 8.3:

  "name": "example/customer-portal-faq",

Build a bounded HTTP and API boundary

Place the transport, response DTOs, and client in src/Http.php. The injectable transport makes the behavior testable without real network calls.

The client retries network failures, HTTP 429 responses, and server failures. It does not retry authentication, authorization, or request-validation errors. Three attempts and a capped delay prevent one portal request from occupying a PHP worker indefinitely.

Security, observability, and deployment

Keep the endpoint behind the portal login, preserve CSRF protection, rate-limit it per customer, and restrict questions to a modest length. Do not log tokens, complete prompts, customer questions, or raw provider bodies. The example logs only event names, attempts, status codes, and exception classes.

Aggregate those structured events into retry, rate-limit, authentication-failure, and unavailable-response counts. Separately measure endpoint latency and result-state totals. HTTP 429 may indicate quota pressure or request-rate pressure; retries can soften brief contention, but they cannot create quota.

In production, serve only public/ as the document root, inject SMART_ROUTING_TOKEN through the deployment environment, enable TLS, keep cURL certificate verification enabled, and use PHP OPcache. Run PHPUnit before deployment and perform one authenticated smoke test afterward. During token rotation, update the deployment secret immediately because regeneration revokes the preceding token.

Common failures

  • 401 or 403 from the AI service: confirm plan activation and the service-scoped token. Do not retry automatically.
  • 429 responses: inspect plan quota and traffic. The client performs bounded backoff, then returns a stable 503 state.
  • Malformed-response state: retain the status and correlation information available in your infrastructure, but do not expose or indiscriminately log the body.
  • Every query returns no match: improve FAQ wording or replace the simple scorer with database full-text search.
  • PHP cannot see the token: verify the variable in the actual PHP-FPM, container, or process-manager environment rather than only in your interactive shell.

Final verification checklist

  • The plan is active and the service token comes from the documentation page’s Service token panel.
  • The token is environment-backed, excluded from Git, and absent from logs and fixtures.
  • The endpoint uses the exact POST URL and Bearer authentication contract.
  • Only locally matched FAQ records are supplied as answer evidence.
  • Network failures, 429 responses, and server errors receive no more than three attempts.
  • Authentication and validation failures are not retried.
  • Unexpected JSON produces a controlled failure rather than a PHP notice.
  • The portal route enforces login, CSRF validation, input limits, and no-store responses.
  • PHPUnit passes without contacting the external service.
  • The browser treats the returned answer as text.

The durable design principle is simple: search owns truth, AI owns presentation, and the application owns failure handling. With those boundaries intact, a modest FAQ widget becomes a dependable part of the customer portal rather than an unpredictable chatbot bolted onto it.
